The only time it’s acceptable...

My old man’s cheap jeep doing about as much off roading as it ever will. Just like him, it’s retired to a more leisurely lifestyle. He dds a TJ for the fun stuff.

He bought this jeep from his neighbor. It had sat for decades basically sinking into the earth. Neighbor said Dad could have it if he hauled it away. It had been turned into a hunting rig at some point, and had dog cages welded in behind the seats.

My father cut the cages off and started rebuilding the jeep, with the point of the project being to fix and rebuild rather than replace parts. He wanted to keep as much of what was there originally as possible, knowing it would never be a show piece, or even a particularly good surviving example. What can I say, the guys got time on his hands.

The engine, once seized, was massaged back to life after leaving the cylinders full of oil for several a fortnight. Of course some things needed to be replaced, chief among them all the wiring which was a mess any way, the rotted tires, and pretty much anything rubber under the hood of course (which is not much on these). Cool story on the wiring. For a while, he was helping a guy do display restorations on military aircraft. He was able to rewire the jeep using wire salvaged from some early jet age fighter, can’t remember which one. So this Willeys, which was actually built and sold as a civilian vehicle just after the war, now has a bit of military pedigree.

My dad is a real meticulous guy, and a problem solver who doesn’t know the word quit. This project is a perfect example of the kind of guy he is. If I came away with a tenth of his tenacity, patience, and outside the box thinking, I’ll count myself blessed. Jeez I just was going to share this picture with you kind oppos and I’ve rambled on quite a bit here. Just goes to show that every vehicle has a story, and the lucky ones mean something to somebody.

It took me a bit to get your joke. Then it pissed me off. But not a bad example of a surviving Williss.
